Dementia; is a chronic and continuous decline in brain function. This disease causes loss of memory, mental alertness, language skills, and as the disease progresses it also causes loss of the ability to care for oneself.
Lewy bodies are abnormal deposits of a protein called alpha-synclin.
Lewy body dementia: This severe type of dementia is the most common type of dementia after Alzheimer’s in older people, and is often misdiagnosed. With Lewy body dementia, there is an abnormal build-up of proteins inside brain cells. As this build-up increases the brain cells become severely affected and no longer function properly.
The disease is progressive and relentless, causing impairment of important body functions (memory, thinking and coordination), in many cases even significant cognitive decline.
The loss of a brilliant and talented actor and comedian
The actor and comedian Robin Williams was one of the most talented comedians of his generation, his great energy, staging and superbly creative improvisations made him famous worldwide, but on August 11, 2014 his brilliance was overshadowed when his lifeless body was found in a room of his residence located in the state of California, the presumed cause of his death was suicide.
Early reports suggested that it was because the actor suffered from severe depression, and it was not until two years after his death that his widow Susan Schneider published an article in the journal Neurology in which she reveals that what caused such a fateful event was because the actor suffered from Lewy body dementia which was discovered in his post-mortem pathological examination.
The complicated thing about this disease is that it is very difficult to diagnose, it is often confused with Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s diseases which were diagnosed in the actor. After his death, samples of his brain tissue were sent to laboratories for routine analysis by neuropathologists, and when the tissue was analyzed under a microscope, Lewy bodies were found in his brain. The disease was already at an advanced stage.
