That word is neurowellness. And if you have been feeling chronically exhausted, persistently anxious, unable to relax even when you have time to, wired but never rested — neurowellness is the framework that explains what is happening in your body. And more importantly, what you can do about it. On January 27, 2026, the Global Wellness Summit announced its ten wellness trends for the year. Among the most discussed — ranked #3 on the list and generating significant clinical and cultural momentum — was The Rise of Neurowellness. The summit’s framing was precise: regulating the nervous system is the next frontier of human health. What Neurowellness Actually Is — And Why It Is Different From Mental HealthNeurowellness responds by shifting care upstream, drawing on neuroscience, behavioural science, somatic practices, sensory design and consumer neurotechnology to train the nervous system rather than treat disease. Unlike traditional brain or mental health care, it focuses on building capacity and flexibility before pathology appears, supporting whole-body health in daily life. That upstream orientation is the key distinction. Mental health care — essential and underutilised as it is — typically addresses the nervous system after dysfunction has already appeared: after the anxiety disorder, after the depression, after the burnout has become acute. Neurowellness asks a different question: what can we do to maintain nervous system flexibility and resilience before those thresholds are crossed? It is the preventive medicine of the mind-body interface. Influencers and wellness communities are promoting techniques aimed at down-regulating the sympathetic nervous system and up-regulating the parasympathetic nervous system. Nervous System Dysregulation — The Clinical PictureNervous system dysregulation is a term commonly used to describe a state in which the nervous system becomes overly sensitive and reactive. When the nervous system is dysregulated, it becomes imbalanced easily and remains in that imbalanced state for too long. Chronic sympathetic dominance: The sympathetic nervous system stays activated constantly, keeping you in fight-or-flight mode. You feel anxious, hypervigilant, and unable to slow down. Your body treats work deadlines like physical threats. 2. Freeze mode: The system shuts down into freeze. You feel emotionally numb, exhausted, and disconnected. Motivation disappears. This often develops after prolonged sympathetic dominance as the body attempts to protect itself through withdrawal. 3. The cycle: When stress becomes chronic, you may alternate between feeling anxious and irritable or emotionally numb and shut down. If your body struggles to return to a calm, regulated state, you may be experiencing the physiological effects of nervous system dysregulation. 4. The compounding effect: Chronic stress can cause persistent sympathetic activation of the nervous system, leading to heightened anxiety and physical symptoms. Here is the honest clinical landscape. ❶ Breathwork — The Most Accessible, Most Underutilised Intervention Long-standing wellness anchors like breathwork, touch therapy and yoga will increasingly be reframed as nervous system medicine. The physiological sigh — a double inhale through the nose followed by a long exhale through the mouth — has been studied at Stanford and shown to rapidly downregulate the sympathetic nervous system within one to two breath cycles. Slow, extended exhalation stimulates vagal activity and shifts the autonomic balance toward parasympathetic dominance. This is not metaphor. It is measurable, reproducible physiology. It costs nothing. It requires no device. You cannot think your way out of a dysregulated nervous system. Low-stimulation environments, reduced artificial light exposure in the evening, minimising notification-driven digital use, and intentional quiet are not luxuries. The emphasis on quantifiable metrics and achieving a “perfect” state of nervous system balance can foster a sense of never being “good enough,” leading to increased stress and a diminished sense of well-being. 💡 WHAT TO BE APPROPRIATELY SCEPTICAL ABOUT ⚠️ The over-quantification trap: What is emerging is not a rejection of science or technology, but a recalibration that prioritises regulation over results, sensation over scores, and internal coherence over external validation. If tracking your HRV score daily is making you more anxious, not less, the tool has defeated its purpose. ⚠️ Expensive devices with thin evidence: Many of the trending gadgets and devices associated with nervous system regulation come with a significant financial cost. The breathwork that takes thirty seconds and costs nothing often has more robust evidence behind it than a $400 vibration device. Start with the foundations. ⚠️ Nervous system dysregulation is not always wellness-addressable: Significant trauma, PTSD, severe anxiety disorders, and complex mental health conditions require clinical intervention beyond lifestyle neurowellness practices. Your Neurowellness Starting Point — What to Do Today❶ Notice before you fix Spend three days simply observing your nervous system state through the day. When do you feel tight, scattered, wired? When do you feel calm and present? Patterns will emerge. Patterns can be addressed. Symptoms you cannot name cannot be treated. ❷ Practice the physiological sigh daily Double inhale through the nose — first breath fills the lungs, second tops them up — then a long, slow exhale through the mouth.
